We sent French street photographer Joanna Lemanska to Marseille to experience the city, its people and UEFA Europa League football. What she found was beauty, diversity and a rich collision of history and modernity on the Mediterranean.

Marseille — France’s second city on the south coast. Renowned for being a Mediterranean melting pot of diversity with its rich culture, history and art. Many that know it would say it has a southern sensibility completely of its own. And then there is the accent — a warm and friendly singsong with long and lilting exaggerated drawls. I had been to Marseille only once before, many years ago, but that had been before I was into photography and so my souvenirs of that time were vague. This trip, however, was to be different. I was travelling to Marseille to take in a UEFA Europa League match between Olympique de Marseille and Portuguese side S.C. Braga. My goal was to experience the passion of the fans, the players and the competition as a guest of Enterprise Rent-A-Car, and then head out into Marseille over the weekend to explore the city, its atmosphere and its surroundings.

Passion in every city

“What I do like about European nights is the floodlights. I’ve had so many special nights at Anfield, watching European games — but the floodlights represent the unknown — what’s going to happen tonight?”

Liverpool. A city of culture and spirit, where passion runs right down to the core. A passion that gives the city its own incomparable identity. A passion that is central to football. It has the power to connect people from all walks of life — to inspire, to empower, to overcome.

When European cities host UEFA Europa League matches, those cities come alive. Cultures merge and local pride becomes a badge of honour, a declaration to the world that they deserve their place on the map. Matches become memories, shaping people’s lives and impacting the area’s own DNA.

Enterprise sees the passion in every city. Go with Enterprise. Go #BeyondtheGame.
